The Misfit EP
We’re excited to announce a new work by David Curry—his first limited-track album drops today.
That’s right…even from his bed, Dave’s creativity has not been extinguished. Let us explain how we got here…
Throughout much of his life, Dave has played the guitar. And privately, he has written songs over the decades as well—despite not reading music, he (like his mother Blanche before him) was always talented at playing by ear. After he retired from the University of Cincinnati a few years ago, he doubled down on his musical pursuits, taking guitar lessons and practicing almost daily. By his own admission, he got a lot better! After ALS began taking the dexterity from his fingers, not being able to continue playing the guitar was one of his biggest frustrations. His mind still being creative, he decided to work with a musician out of Nashville named Simon Reid to take his recorded demos and transform them into full, professional tracks.
After some back-and-forth notes, and some brilliant creative work from Simon’s end, Dave has five original tracks finished. You can listen to them and download the album at his Bandcamp site, where he has also included liner notes and his original lyrics. They are also embedded on his website. Simon and some talented Nashville singers are responsible for most of the playing and singing you’ll hear, although Simon was able to preserve Dave’s lead guitar parts from his demos on several songs. On the track “Night Fog,” you can also hear his originally recorded vocals.
These songs are reflective of Dave’s life experiences, from growing up in Michigan to the last song he wrote—a tune for Patty that he composed after his ALS diagnosis. Although the tone of these songs aren’t all sunshine and rainbows, the Curry family agrees that art is meant to be shared. We hope you enjoy getting a small glimpse into Dave’s creative mind, knowing that music is still swirling around in there even if his guitar is now waiting for its next songwriter (probably Dave’s grandson Leo) to pick it back up.
